Purple Dragon Knights

The Purple Dragon Knights are the highest order of chivalry in Cormyr, and one of the most renown knighthoods in all Faerûn. Like the War Wizards, as an order they are directly loyal to the crown as the embodiment of the land. The Purple Dragons are named for the Purple Dragon. Despite their now-unquestionable loyalty, the order actually began with one of the early rebellions of Arabel. The Purple Dragons declared themselves servants of the land rather than the king, by which they meant to support the creation of a new, independent realm. But after the rebellion was put down, the Purple Dragons recognized that the land was manifested through the king, and swore the first of the oaths of allegiance which they hold to this day.

Those sworn oaths are binding for life, so that even if a Purple Dragon retires, he can be called back into service should a dire enough threat present itself. All Cormyrians are eligible to join the knighthood, though the generosity is not without limits. Non-humans are often expected to swear stronger oaths than humans, and are often under a lengthy probationary period when they first join the order. Non-nobles are often given the lowest rank of Blade, and many never advance from this position. Nobles, on the other hand, often ascend quickly, or even immediately, to positions of leadership and authority. But such is the way of things across the Realms, even in famed Cormyr. The highest rank of the order, the Lord High Marshall, is held now, as so often before, by a member of the king’s own family, the princess Alusair Obarskyr herself. Whether low or high, to wear the garb of the Purple Dragons and ride in their ranks is among the highest honors that anyone in the kingdom can have; and the folk of Cormyr hold the Purple Dragon knights in almost religious reverence.
